This 1935 Auburn 851 Boattail Speedster has been in California since at least the 1950s and was owned for more than three decades by a collector who drove it to early Auburn Cord Duesenburg Club events on the West Coast.

The stunning design of the 1935 Auburn Speedster was the work of two men, Alan Leamy was the chief designer and Gordon Buehrig modified his original design to create boat tailed body you see here. Back in 1935 having a car, or a motorcycle that was capable of doing one hundred miles per hour or “the ton” as it used to be called, was a big deal. Nowadays it is a level of performance that many of us take for granted. This is a 1935 Auburn 851 Super-Charged Speedster. As the garage door slowly rises, a simple one piece chromed bumper comes into view. Then, emerging into sight is a vertical chrome finishing piece at the very end of the boattail. Finally the entire Speedster can be seen and savored.

The Speedster was given much more voluptuous lines, courtesy of Gordon Buehrig, who would later on style the equally snazzy Cord 810/812.
